Key takeaways

The bed bug (Cimex lectularius) is a reddish-brown insect measuring 4 to 7 mm, wingless, that bites at night and hides in mattress seams, bed frames and skirting boards. It transmits no disease, but causes itching and sleep disturbances. Eradicating it relies on a professional treatment that destroys adults, larvae and eggs, followed by a second control visit.

Our No. 1 specialty

Bed bugs: lasting, guaranteed eradication

The bed bug (Cimex lectularius) is one of the pests most difficult to eradicate without professional intervention. Highly resilient, it hides in mattress seams, bed frames, skirting boards and cracks, and moves from one room to another — or even from one home to another.

At Track Nuisibles, our Certibiocide-certified technicians carry out a precise diagnosis, then apply the protocol best suited to your situation. Our treatments destroy adults, larvae and eggs to break the breeding cycle for good.

Signs of an infestation

  • Bites in lines or clusters, often on the arms, legs and back
  • Small black spots (droppings) on the sheets, mattress and bed base
  • Blood stains on the sheets after a night's sleep
  • White eggs and translucent shed skins in the seams
  • Distinctive sweet odour in cases of heavy infestation

Our methods

Three complementary treatments

We select — and combine — the method best suited to your infestation and your home.

Making the right choice

Cryogenics, chemical or dry steam: the comparison

Often combined

For a widespread infestation, cryogenics or dry steam are frequently combined with a chemical treatment: cold or heat immediately destroys the visible harbourages and the eggs, while the residual action of the insecticide provides lasting protection — where cold and steam have no persistent effect.

Technical sheet

Bed bugs: everything you need to know about the enemy of your nights

A true nightmare of the night, the bed bug bites and feeds on blood like a vampire. Its bites cause redness and itching without being dangerous to health — but the insect slips in everywhere and remains extremely difficult to eradicate without professional intervention.

Cimex lectularius — oval, flat, brown body, 4 to 8 mm.

Why they are so difficult to eliminate

Highly resistant, the bed bug hides by day in the tiniest crevices and only comes out at night to bite. A female lays up to 500 eggs a year: without a full treatment targeting adults, larvae and eggs, the infestation systematically returns.

Our Certibiocide-certified technicians identify every nesting site, then apply the appropriate protocol — chemical, dry steam or cryogenics — with a written results guarantee.

Profile

The bed bug in detail

General information

  • Family: Cimicidae
  • Scientific name: Cimex lectularius
  • Type: blood-feeding ectoparasite — it feeds exclusively on blood
  • Habitat: as close as possible to humans: bed, bed base, skirting boards, sofa, suitcase, car
  • Distinctive trait: photophobic (shuns light); it needs blood to reproduce

Lifestyle

  • Life expectancy: 6 to 12 months
  • Reproduction: 5 to 15 eggs per day — up to 500 eggs per year
  • Egg hatching: about 10 days
  • Adult stage: reached in about 5 weeks
  • Predators: virtually none indoors — which is why infestations spiral out of control

Physical description

  • Length: 4 to 8 mm (up to 10 mm when engorged with blood)
  • Shape: oval and flat
  • Colour: brown, turning reddish after a blood meal
  • Nymph (young): translucent and paler, it darkens as it ages

Signs of presence

  • Bed sheets: small blood stains on waking
  • Droppings: black / reddish specks on the mattress and bed base
  • Smell: a sweet, lingering odour in cases of heavy infestation
  • Skin: bites in a line or clustered, with intense itching
  • Eggs: whitish to translucent, single or in clusters within seams

How it bites

A formidable mouthpart

The bed bug is equipped with a long rostrum — a two-channel piercing tube that lets it feed without waking its victim:

  • An anaesthetic is injected to numb the pain of the bite.
  • An anticoagulant thins the blood for easier feeding.

That's why the bites are often only noticed on waking. Once full, the bug turns dark red and returns to its hiding place to digest.

Prevention: reducing everyday risks

  • Certified anti-bed-bug encasement on the mattress and box spring
  • Wash exposed sheets, pillows and clothing at a minimum of 60 °C
  • Caulking of cracks, skirting boards and openings where they slip through
  • Thorough vacuuming of the room, several times a week
  • Sealing infested textiles in airtight bags before washing
  • Steam treatment of bedding to destroy bed bugs and eggs
  • Decluttering the bedroom and removing decorative accessories
  • Regular inspection of mattress seams and headboards
Prevention isn't always enough

At the first signs, only a professional treatment eliminates the source for good — eggs included. Don't wait for the infestation to spread through the whole home.
